A DNS lookup returns an IP address or a domain name depending on whether it is a forward or reverse lookup. Thus if you have a domain name you can find out its IP number and if you know the IP address you can look up the corresponding domain name.

Nonetheless, when a DNS lookup is done with a particular intention such as finding out the owner of a website, the process does not end with the return of an IP address or domain name. In the cyberworld every domain name is associated with a unique IP address. While the domain name is human recognizable (alphanumeric), the IP address is machine-readable.
